5 rock festivals ready to blow away heat wave

Five major rock festivals are getting ready to touch down throughout Korea between late July and mid-August, the time when the summer heat reaches its peak.

Armed with the hottest stage settings and a lineup of international headliners, the five biggest rock festivals -- 2013 Ansan Valley Rock Festival, 2013 Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival, 2013 Jisan World Rock Festival, 2013 Super Sonic, and Citybreak -- are expected to cool off the heat wave scorching the nation.

Such rock events are no longer the exclusive preserve of rock enthusiasts. They are now becoming a public festival where everyone of all ages drinks, dances, and sings the night away all together.

2013 Ansan Valley Rock Festival is the first to fire the fanfare. Marking its fifth run this year, the rock concert will start on July 26 at Daebudo Badahyanggi Theme Park enveloped by the smell of the sea.

The annual festival serves up a lineup of both domestic and international rock stars including Britpop band the Cure which is to fly in from Britain for the first time to perform, American singer-songwriter Skrillex, and British indie rock band Foals, just to name a few.

Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival, often called the originator of Korea’s rock festivals, will bring famous artists from flamboyant settings around the world to the stage this year.

Taking place in Songdo, Incheon from August 2 to 4, the ninth edition of the rock festival will feature many international groups such as American rock band Fall Out Boy and Britpop band Suede, coupled with a total of 16 domestic bands including Deulgukhwa, YB, and Kang Sanae.

British acid jazz band Jamiroquai is on the last-day lineup for 2013 Jisan World Rock Festival to be held at Jisan Forest Resort from August 2 to 4.
On the same day, there will be another rock party in a cool forest, 2013 Jisan World Rock Festival.

Accompanied by beautiful nature in the woods, this festival boasts a lineup of world-class rock musicians including British acid jazz band Jamiroquai, American rock band Weezer, and British rock band Placebo.

The three above-mentioned rock festivals offer something more than just a star-studded rock concert. What makes them intriguing is the option to camp out overnight. A camping zone installed around the venue will give rock fans the opportunity to spend all night with their families, friends, and loved ones, soaked into music and dance.

The King of K-Pop Cho Yong-pil will be part of 2013 Super Sonic on August 15.
Along with these will be two other rock festivals that can be enjoyed in the middle of Seoul.

One of them is 2013 Super Sonic, a two-day rock concert to be held in Olympic Park, eastern Seoul between August 14 and 15.

This year, it will present a special stage on the second day, which will definitely be the highlight of the show. The King of K-Pop Cho Yong-pil will perform with up-and-coming indie rock bands, for the first time in his career at this kind of rock-themed festival.

Global headliners including British pop duo Pet Shop Boys and American soul musician John Legend will also be featured at this year’s Super Sonic.

Last but not least, 2013 Citybreak will be the grand finale of 2013 major rock festivals. American heavy metal band Metallica and Britpop band Muse will invite Korean rock lovers to their rock world for 120 minutes each.

This festival will kick off a two-day run on August 17 at Jamsil Sports Complex, southern Seoul.
