Ceremony for the "Mother of Gwangju", Jo Ah-rah Held

Leading up to the 10th anniversary of the death of Jo Ah-rah, the president of the Gwangju YMCA sponsored a ceremony for the publication of her biography and tribute yesterday.

Gwangju YMCA has recently announced that it released the book titled ‘Mother of the Low Ground’, a biographical work on the life of Ms. Jo to celebrate the 100th anniversary of her birth as well as the 10th anniversary of her death.

Ms. Jo has been called the ‘Mother of Gwangju’ and the ‘Mother of Democracy’ due to her crusade for women`s rights and equality in Jeollanamdo as well as for work as a member of the Counteraction Committee during the May 18th Democratic Movement in 1980. 

The publication party was attended by a number of local public figures including Mayor Gang Woon-tae, President of the City Council, Jo Ho-gwun and Father Jo Bi-oh.
