MOFA Spokesperson’s Commentary on the UN General Assembly’s Adoption of the Resolution on the Situation of Human Rights in the DPRK at its Plenary Session

The government of the Republic of Korea welcomes the UN General Assembly’s adoption of the resolution on the situation of human rights in North Korea at its plenary session on December 18, following the General Assembly Third Committee’s adoption of the resolution on November 18.

The adoption of the resolution with overwhelming support despite its stronger language, including encouraging the Security Council to consider referring the situation in the DPRK to the International Criminal Court (ICC), reflects the UN and international community’s strong willingness to address the serious human rights situation in the DPRK.

The ROK government also notes that this year’s resolution acknowledges that the human rights violations in the DPRK may constitute crimes against humanity and recommends taking appropriate steps to ensure accountability.

The ROK government once again calls on North Korea to take concrete and substantive measures to improve the human rights situations in the DPRK in line with the recommendations in the UN General Assembly resolution.
