The President Leaves for Summit in the United States


The President's first stop will be in New York from May 5-6. 

After arriving in New York on the afternoon of May 5, the President's first order of business will be a meeting with members of the local Korean community. The President has always made it a priority when visiting any country to meet first with the local Korean residents and she plans to do the same in Washington and Los Angeles.

On May 6, the President will visit the United Nations Headquarters to meet with Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. She will also take the opportunity to offer her encouragement to Korean nationals currently working at the UN.

The President will then head to Washington, D.C., where she will stay until May 8. In Washington, the President will first visit Arlington National Cemetery and the Korean War Veterans Memorial. At these sites and during the special dinner to be held the following day in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the ROK-US alliance, the President will pay her respects and express her gratitude to those who came to Korea's aid during difficult times.

On May 7, the President will hold a summit with President Barack Obama. During the summit, the two leaders will discuss, among other things, the future direction of the ROK-US alliance, the current situation with regards to North Korea, the results of the KORUS FTA and plans for furthering substantive cooperation in the greater Northeast Asian region and around the world.

Key outcomes, which will include the adoption of a joint declaration in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the ROK-US alliance, will be announced at a joint press conference following the summit. The two leaders will also attend a luncheon.

On the afternoon of May 7, President will also meet with World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim. 

On May 8, the President will give an address at a joint meeting of the United States Congress. She will share her vision for peace and cooperation on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia as well as her insights on strengthening the ROK-US partnership and its contributions to the international community. The President will then attend a roundtable luncheon hosted by the US Chamber of Commerce, after which she will depart for Los Angeles. 

After arriving in Los Angeles on May 8, the President will attend a meeting on May 9 with business leaders and attend a luncheon hosted by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.  
This will be the President's first overseas visit since her inauguration and will be significant in setting the direction for the future development of the comprehensive and strategic alliance between the Republic of Korea and the United States.
