For reciprocal, neighborly National Assembly: rival party leaders emphasize

On May 15, the new floor leaders of the rival parties, Rep. Choi Kyunghwan of the Saenuri Party and Rep. Jun Byung Hun of the Democratic Party, had a meeting and discussed issues up for an extraordinary plenary session scheduled in June.

It was the first official meeting since they were elected, and was held in the Korean traditional-style reception house, Sarangjae, on the Members’ Hill in the National Assembly complex.

Rep. Choi said, “The National Assembly should embrace people who face hardships and sufferings. We should put our efforts together to fulfill the pledges we have made for the underprivileged, such as economic democracy bills.” “Mr. Jun and I will do our best to reform the parliament into an active, productive and reciprocal one,” he added.

Rep. Jun said, “I will apply two fundamental principles to my works as the floor leader. Lives of the people and rational common sense. Certain matters may be open to negotiation and concession, but these two will never be compromised. I will be expecting consideration and concessions of Mr. Choi in a bid for a National Assembly that does not concern the people.”

They also talked about issues related to economic democracy measures, including the amendment to the Fair Transactions in Franchise Business Act, abolition of the exclusive accusation right of the Fair Trade Commission and the ordinary wage problems, all expected to be on the table in the plenary session in June.
