Speaker Kang Chang-hee met with Mr. Winfried Kretschmann, the president of Bundesrat, the upper house of Germany, who is on his visit to the Republic of Korea at the invitation of the National Assembly to mark 130 years since the two countries normalized diplomatic relations and 50 years since Korea sent miners to Germany.
In the talks with his counterpart, Speaker Kang said, “German provided our country with medical aid and necessary facilities after the Korean War, and when Korea was hit by the global financial crisis in 1997, also gave us financial support. We expect that as a country that has brought about the national unification, Germany will play an active role in solving the nuclear problem of North Korea.”
Mr. Kretschmann replied, “I also look forward to a miracle of peaceful reunification in the Korean peninsula. Germans admire the remarkable economic growth of the Republic of Korea that was accomplished in just half a century. As powerhouses of high technology, Korea and Germany need to expand exchanges in economy, academies, culture and human resources. Our mutual cooperation will lead us to shared growth.”
Also attending the meeting included Vice Speaker Lee Byung-suk (SP), President of the Korea-Germany Parliamentary Friendship Group Nam Kyung Pil (SP), executive members Bae Ki Woon (DP) and Yi Wan Young (SP), Secretary-General Chung Jin-suk, Chief of Staff to Speaker Kim Yeon-gwang and Spokesman Bae Seong-rye. Accompanying Mr. Kretschmann were German Ambassador to Korea Rolf Mafael, members of the House Franz Untersteller, Secretary-General of the Bundesrat Gerd Schmitt, and Spokesperson of the state government Rudi Hoogvliet.
