Speaker Kang attends opening ceremony of wheelchair basketball games

On June 21, Speaker Kang Chang-hee delivered congratulatory remarks at the opening ceremony of the 12th Korea Post Cup Wheelchair Basketball Championship, held at Seoul Student Gymnasium.

In his remarks, he spoke about the reality of Korean society in which infrastructure for the disabled is severely deficient whereas prejudice and discrimination against them still prevail. “When we try harder, however, we can bring a brighter future faster, as we witnessed hope while the number of wheelchair basketball teams tripled over the past ten years,” he said.

After the ceremony, Speaker Kang watched the opening match, and talked with the athletes about difficulties they found as sportsmen with disabilities.

Speaker Kang has been known for his interest in sports for the disabled, working as the first president of the Korea Wheelchair Basketball Federation for seven years from 1997, as the chairman of the Daejeon Metropolitan Society Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities for 14 years. He also co-founded the national wheelchair basketball league in 1997.

The event was also attended by President of Korea Wheelchair Basketball Federation Kim Jang-sil, President of Korean Sports Association for the Disabled Yoon Seok-yong, President of Incheon 2014 Asian Para Games Organizing Committee Kim Sung-il, Chief of Staff to Speaker Kim Yeon-gwang, and Spokesman Bae Seong-rye.
