Expanded Production Base in Gwangju Factory of Kia Motors to be Halted Again

The Gwangju Plant of Kia Motors’ project to expand its production base for 620 thousand automobiles has been halted once again due to the partial strike among subcontract-laborers in the factory.

The Gwangju Branch of the national metal labor association in Kia Motors has announced their plan for a general strike beginning tomorrow if the management refuses the labors’ special request on transferring thosewith temporary positions into a regular full time position.

One of the temporary laborers attempted to burn himself to death this week on Monday to encourage effective resolution of this issue regarding transferring the non-regular position workers into permanent positions at Kia Motors.

Upon halted operation of the factory, expansion of production from the current 500,000 to 620,000 will be postponed without any date set to resume in the future.
