Government to Increase ‘Giga Internet' Penetration Rate to 90% by 2017

Ministry of Future, Creation and Science signs agreement with five pilot service providers

The Ministry of Future, Creation and Science announced on May 6 that it will expand the 'Giga Internet' pilot service and increase the nation-wide Giga-Internet penetration rate to 90% by 2017. The Giga-Internet is 10 times faster than current Internet services.

On the same day the Ministry selected five service providers - KT Consortium, SK Broadband Consortium, LG U-Plus Consortium and T-Broadband Consortium - and designated them as Giga-Internet pilot service providers for this year.

The pilot service providers will provide Giga Internet to 18,000 households in 27 cities this year. As of the end of last year, 12,000 households in 17 cities used the Giga Internet service.

The Ministry will invest 10.3 billion won including government budget (3.3 billion won) and private-sector funding to develop Giga-Internet application services.

Through such investments, application services such as UHD IPTV home cinema, UHD glasses-free 3D digital signage, tera-cloud service for start-ups, wired-wireless giga home content sharing, real-time full HD medical consulting services, etc. will be developed.

The Ministry will also establish a 'Giga-Internet Promotion Team (tentatively named)' this year which is participated by the industry, academia and research circles, and pursue the commercialization of Giga-Internet and promotion of Giga-Internet services.

Also, the government plans to create the most advanced network infrastructure ecosystem in the world by 2017.
