The ROK-China-Japan Meeting of Directors-General for Latin American and Caribbean Affairs has been held every year since 2006. It will be held in China this year and in the ROK next year.
The upcoming Meeting will be attended by Jang Myung-soo, Director-General for Latin American and Caribbean Affairs of the ROK Foreign Ministry, and his Chinese and Japanese counterparts Shen Zhiliang and Akira Yamada.
In the Meeting, the ROK will discuss how the Community of Latin American and the Caribbean States (CELAC), the first regional body that covers all 33 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the ROK, China and Japan can further increase substantive cooperation. The ROK will also request the Chinese and Japanese sides’ active cooperation to strengthen the role of the Forum of East Asia-Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC), whose Cyber Secretariat is run by the ROK.
The forthcoming Meeting is expected to serve as a good opportunity to further promote cooperation between the three countries by helping them better understand each other’s policies towards Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as to explore ways to enhance substantive cooperation with Latin America and the Caribbean, a region which is increasing its role on the international stage, with its emergence as a new economic bloc.
Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the Meeting, the ROK Director-General for Latin American and Caribbean Affairs will hold bilateral meetings with his Chinese and Japanese counterparts respectively and discuss issues of mutual concern, including ways to boost bilateral cooperation.
