Delicacies of Busan - Korean foods that foreigners like 5 Kimchi Stew


A spicy and savory treasure

To commemorate Visit Busan Year, the city’s English-language newspaper Dynamic Busan will introduce Korea’s most-loved culinary dishes in a series of feature articles. The last part of the series is kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew), which is made from the Korean traditional food kimchi.  The spicy and alluring taste of kimchi jjigae is a delicacy that is loved by the masses in Korea.


Kimchi jjigae(stew), made from the nation's signature fermented vegetable, is a favorite food among foreigners.

Seoul kimchi, bulgogi and bossam (boiled pork)
At this restaurant, visitors can taste jeongol (stew) made from adding pork to Korean traditional kimchi. The name of this restaurant originates from a 20-year-old restaurant in Seoul’s Yeongdong Market, and this restaurant maintains the moniker in Busan.

In the kimchi jeongol, the ratio of kimchi and pork is half and half. Kimchi bulgogi is 20,000 won ($18) to 30,000 won, and a bowl of plain or fried rice on the side is an additional 1,000 won to 2,000 won. Bossam (boiled pork eaten with doenjang sauce and wrapped in greens) is 20,000 won to 30,000 won.

Bossam kimchi (cabbage and radish kimchi wrapped in a ball) is 3,000 won, and folded egg costs 5,000 won. Customers can request mild, slightly spicy or spicy seasoning according to taste. The restaurant is located on the second floor of the Starbucks building across from Centum Hotel.

Take Metro line 2 and get off at Centum City Station or Busan Museum of Art. Parking is free for one hour. Open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. (+82-51-742-8566)

Samgwang Boribab
Located at the rear entrance of Lotte Hotel in Seomyeon, Samgwang boribabjip (Samgwang means three brilliant kinds of “light” - taste, hospitality and ambience) offers boribab (boiled barley and rice) and a distinctive kind of kimchi jjigae, which is 10,000 won ($9) for two. Opening hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Take Metro line 1 and get off at Seomyeon Station, then walk 10 minutes. (+82-51-803-9636)

Shigol Tong Dwaeji Bokkeum (Country-style stir-fried whole pork)
This restaurant is renowned not only for its kimchi jjigae but also its kimchi bokkeum (stir-fried kimchi). Visitors can enjoy whole pork just like it is served in the countryside.  Kimchi bokkeum is 6,000 won and kimchi jjigae  is 5,500 won. Opening hours are from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Take Metro line 1 and get off at Yeonsan-dong Station, then walk toward Seomyeon. (+82-51-851-0822)
