World's first 'Ocean planting day

The declaration of the world's first ‘Ocean Planting Day’ was made earlier, and is to be held on Jeju island.

The First Ocean Planting Day, which was designated as an official national day for the first time this year, will have a ceremony with the theme of, 'Gardening in a sea full of life.' Yoon Jin-sook, the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Woo Guen-min, the Jeju Governor, as well as various fishery organizations, will gather at Woonjin Harbor in Seogwipo City on May 10th.

The ocean planting day means the planting of marine algae in the oceans, just as trees are planted on Arbor Day. Accordingly, the government amended the Fisheries Resources Management Act and designated that Sea Arbor Day be held every year on May 10th in order to raise awareness about the importance of the marine ecosystem and how severe its destruction would be to humans.

Meanwhile, Jeju will put efforts into obtaining political and financial support from the government as its seas are a rich repository of natural resources and a prime location to start a campaign centered on green growth.
